Biggest Remodeling Mistakes

At Ascent Builders, we see a lot of different remodels; both the good and the bad. There are a few big mistakes that we have seen homeowners make in previous remodeling projects that we try to guard against in our projects.

Buying Cheap Materials: A huge mistake we often see is skimping on materials. In this instance, you will ultimately get what you pay for, and buying more expensive, higher quality materials will definitely pay off in the long run.
Gutting Without Planning: Once homeowners decide that they want to start a project, its easy to just begin gutting a room. Doing this without planning first can cause you unnecessary headaches, because you don’t always have to clear out every part of a room to renovate. Plan first, gut later.
Ignoring Lighting: This is a classic mistake. Lighting can change the whole look and feel of a room, and considering the lighting when undertaking a remodel can make or break the final product.
Going Too Trendy: Its tempting to follow exactly what is trendy when working on a remodel, but this automatically puts your project on a short term instead of taking into account that classic touches will have more staying power.
Ignoring Your Home’s Style: Its important to keep a remodel within the basic style of your home. For example, if you have a very modern home, adding in a country-style kitchen will seem very odd, and doesn’t keep with the character of your home. If you want a change, consider this before you have a remodel that sticks out like a sore thumb.
