How Much Does It Cost to Finish a Basement?

Though of course every project is unique, sometimes it can be frustrating if you are thinking about a remodeling project and have no idea where to begin as far as cost. So we thought we would shed some light on what you can expect if you are thinking about finishing your basement.

First of all, you should think about what size your finished basement will be and what your priorities are when it comes to finishes. A few questions to consider:

  • What will the finished square footage be?
  • What types of rooms do you want to include (family room, bedrooms, bathrooms, gym, etc.)
  • What level of finishes would you like?
  • Are there any architectural elements you want to include?
  • Will any specialty features be included, such as a wine cellar, wet bar, or home theater?

Without considering special features, you can expect to spend somewhere in the following ranges for a finished basement (yes, we know that these numbers range pretty widely, but hopefully they give you something to go on!)

For a small basement (500-800 sq ft), you could expect it to cost between $30,000 and $60,000, depending on finishes. A medium-size basement (800-1000 sq ft), you could expect to spend in the range of $38,000 to $70,000. And for a large basement (1000-1500 sq ft), you would likely be looking at costs between $45,000 and $85,000. All of these estimates are for a basic basement, with no bathroom included. Bathrooms, wet bars, and fireplaces can run you another $4000 to $25,000, depending on finishes.
