Our Top Basement Finishing Tips

There are so many things to consider when finishing you basement. While we 100% agree that finishing your basement can increase your home’s value and you can certainly get a great return on your investment should you sell, there are some things to keep in mind.

Here is a quick list of some of our top tips for homeowners looking to finish their basement:

Make sure the basement looks and feels like the rest of the house. Too often people go a little over the top with their basement. The finishes and design are much higher-end than what is in the rest of the house. You want to keep the same look and feel of the home even in the basement.
Don’t forget about safety. It is important to make sure that there are escape routes in the basement. Once your family starts using the new family room or someone is sleeping in the new guestroom, you need to make sure there is a deep window well with an adequate ladder for quick escapes in case of an emergency.
Be careful about putting in very unique, inflexible rooms. Things like wine cellars, elaborate wet bars and theater rooms are great but you need to think long term. Are you going to want/need those in a few years? What about the next owner? Will they value those?
Don’t cut corners on the basics. Make sure that your basement is properly insulated, your HVAC system is properly set up and that you are tackling any potential water damage/flooding issues.
Remember to leave room for storage! The basement is a great place to store all kinds of things. Make sure you leave some space for storage even if it is under the stairs or with the furnace and water heater.
