The Growing Trend of Outdoor Living Spaces

According to a survey conducted by the American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA), 70% of residential homes in the U.S. have an outdoor living space. Whether it's a patio, back deck, or even a tranquil garden area, more and more homeowners are spending time outdoors.

This isn't a trend that's going away anytime soon, either. A CNN Money report suggests the outdoor living market will reach $5.7 billion by the end of 2016. So, how can you enhance your home's outdoor living space?

Chairs were the most popular addition to outdoor living spaces last year, according to the AHFA survey. Chaise lounges are an excellent choice, as they offer an unmatched level of comfort. Even a few traditional chairs, however, will suffice. Just remember to choose chairs that are waterproof and able to withstand the outdoor environment.

You should also equip your outdoor living space with a table. After all, you'll need somewhere to enjoy drinks and food. Consider a table with a built-in umbrella for added sun protection.

Fireplace or Fire Pit

Another popular addition to outdoor living spaces is a fireplace or fire pit. Both offer a warm and relaxing ambiance that's perfect the upcoming winter months. Of the two, however, a fire pit is the cheapest and easiest to install.

A separate 2014 Residential Landscape Architecture survey found lighting was the most popular "kitchen/entertainment" feature in outdoor living spaces. Rather than installing a basic lamppost, perhaps you can use string lights, tiki torches or some other alternative light source.
